Feed-In Tariffs Explained
To encourage the uptake of renewable energy the government has introduced Feed-in Tariff payments which are effectively guaranteed payments for every kilowatt hour you generate with your wind turbine – this is not for selling the power, just for generating it. For example, if you have a wind turbine powering a remote house nowhere near a mains supply and you can still be paid up to 26.7p/kWh. Not only do you get paid for it but the power generated is still yours to use!
If, however, your house is connected to mains electricity you can also sell any surplus power to your electricity supplier for at least 3p/kWh. So if the wind is blowing and you have nothing switched on then all the power from the wind turbine could be earning you 29.7p/kWh.
